The Brake Disc

The brake disc is the hardest-working part of a racing car: it heats, it glows, it takes everything. Still on its base, drilled right through, it becomes a dial of absolute sobriety.

Desk clock machined from solid aluminium, 39.5 × 38 cm, limited to 20 numbered pieces per finish. Designed and assembled in France by B.R.M Chronographes. From €4,100.

The model

The brake disc, at a standstill.

The contrast of finishes is part of the making. The disc faces are satin-brushed, then chamfered by hand, hole by hole, to bring out every perforation. The polished screw heads stand out against the black of the whole.

The cups, cut from a bar of Fortal, are matched to the colour of the hands. The central hub, with eight visible screws, holds the bezel and the dial. At the foot of the disc, the linking piece carries the B.R.M signature and the numbered plate, and meets the base. Machined from the bar, lacquered, then taken to the polishing tank, it reveals its satin aluminium reinforcing ribs.

The model's internal name, DDF, is that of a chronograph family already in the manufacture's catalogue: the clock and the watches share the same original drawing.
